Hintertux in Zillertal – from Piste to Pool

For all of you who are in constant search of new exciting destinations that are off the beaten track yet safe and fun for all ages, I cannot recommend Hintertux in the famous Ziller Valley enough. Very Julie Andrews – but with a difference.

I stayed at the Kinderhotel Hintertuxerhof in the Ziller Valley at the foot of the Hintertux glacier, and couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw skiers and snowboarders waiting to get on the cable car to take them to the pistes of Hintertux glacier. The temptation was just too much so I took the cable car to the top of the glacier. One minute I was dressed in trainers and shorts, doing some stretches to warm up for a gentle summer hike through the beautiful forests up and down the valley, and the next I was in winter wonderland – in the middle of summer! Here you can ski, snowboard and relax in one of the many deck chairs whilst taking in the breathtaking scenery – just make sure you slap on plenty of sun lotion whatever you do. Much to my surprise, there is a brand new ‘glacier playground’ for the kids right at the top of the glacier! Equally exciting for parents and children is the Ice Palace which is only minutes away from the top station: I was simply awe-struck by the spectacular glacial crevasse – a magical experience seeing frozen waterfalls, giant sparkling ice crystals and natural ice sculptures lit up in white, yellow, pink, green and blue lights.

Choosing a hotel at 1500m at the foot of a glacier means you get to combine blazing sunshine and continental summer temperatures with fresh mountain air and breathtaking scenery. Just amazing! From snow- capped mountain tops and endless forests to waterfalls and lush meadows  – the Hintertuxerhof is ideally located so you take in the best of all worlds whilst sunbathing outside the hotel, on a horse-drawn carriage ride or the hotel’s own panorama glacier. For some serious sun-chilling and a splash, make sure to take a trip to the adventure outdoor pool in nearby Finkenberg.

Hintertux in summer is a hidden treasure. As yet undiscovered by the crowds, you get all the seasons of the year in one holiday, from warm and sunny summer days in the valley to spring-like conditions halfway up the glacier, to fresh snow up at 3,250 metres. For sports lovers, the range of activities on offer is frightening and gives you rafting, canyoning, mountain biking, hiking, climbing and paragliding – all within a few feet of summer skiing and snowboarding! Simply irresistible.
