Both skiers and snowboarders will feel at home here, with plenty of choice of blue, red, and black runs, a snow park and the second steepest run in Austria. For more details on the ski region, please go to our programme.

Skiing in Obertauern

With slopes ranging in altitude between 1,630 and 2,313 m, Obertauern guarantees great skiing conditions in January. The region is popular with both skiers and snowboarders alike: Its 26 lifts provide access to over 100 kilometres of blue, red and black runs, as well as a snow park. For thrill-seekers, the piste alongside the Gamsleiten 2 lift is the second steepest run in Austria. The fast and efficient lift system, wide prepared pistes, and amazing deep-snow skiing all add to Obertauern’s appeal at Easter. The lifts are so cleverly laid out in a circle around the village, in fact, that our solo travellers can ski the so-called ‘Tauern circuit’ and never be far from their hotel.

Other activities on offer in Obertauern:

Obertauern also offers countless hiking trails, letting you enjoy the beautiful winter landscape. If you fancy trying something new on your solo ski holiday, why not join a snowshoe hike with a tour guide, or try snowbiking, an exciting yet safe new adventure? It’s easy for anyone to learn, and rather cool. You can also hire toboggans in every sports shop in Obertauern and try them out on the slopes next to the pistes.

After an active day of skiing, you could go to the hotel’s indoor pool, whirlpool, or adult only rooftop pool and spa where you will find a steam room, range of saunas, quartz grotto, tepidarium, water beds, and a relaxation area with panoramic views of the surrounding Tauern mountains.

Be sure to save some energy for our twice-weekly floodlit night skiing or tobogganing down the Gnadenalm – both fun and memorable experiences. There are also plenty of opportunities for some après ski drinks at Obertauern’s many famous après ski bars. For those who feel more like relaxing in front of the fireplace after their 5-course gourmet dinner, the hotel bar is a great place to enjoy a glass of wine and good company.

The resort and village of Obertauern in Austria:

Obertauern’s history dates back to the Celts (who inhabited the area from the 4th to the 1st centuries B.C.), and the Romans, who used the Tauern Pass to reach Salzburg. The Radstädter Tauern were first mentioned in 1207. The first skiers were recorded here in 1902, and the first lifts built in the 50s and 60s.

Today Obertauern is a popular ski region in the southeast of the Salzburg state, in the Radstädter Tauern mountains and Austria’s only purpose built resort meaning.  The highest slope is at 2,213 m making for snow safe skiing until the end of April.  You can ski the famous Tauern Circuit around the village clockwise or anti-clockwise on a mix of red and blue run and you are never far from the village: You can ski to and from the door of most of its chalet-style hotels. The village itself is located high on the sunny side of the mountain, at 1,741 m.

In 1965, Obertauern had a brush with fame when the Beatles filmed ‘Help’ here, evident in the many  tributes and memorabilia in and around the village. In COVID-free times, Obertauern offers lively, unobtrusive après-ski. Two legendary alpine huts are the Edelweißalm at 1,850 m, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain world and the Lürzer Alm in the centre of town with its rustic charm and famous après-ski parties.

Please see below the testimonials from our first ski holiday in Obertauern for solo skiers in their 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s in March 2023:

"This was my third Solo ski trip (fourth Solo holiday) and it did not disappoint / lived up to my expectations. It was also my second visit to the Hotel Steiner in Obertauern.
We were a smaller group this year but that made no difference whatsoever, I had a great holiday that was very well organised (prior to and during the trip) and with great company. Sandra even managed to sway (almost) perfect ski & weather conditions!
The hotel was great - a real find with a lot on offer and very friendly staff ... and so easy for accessing the piste.
I cannot recommend the SPOH Solo Holidays enough ... I always have such a good time and would highly recommend them to anyone who may be considering it!"

- Angela - solo ski trip in Obertauern, Austria (January 2024)
"I am 65 years old, a fit and capable skier with many years of experience. I love to go to the mountains every year, usually with family or friends. Unfortunately, my partner, because of injury, will never ski again, so sometimes I have gone skiing on my own when there are no family or friends to go with. It is fair to say, skiing on one’s own is a bit of a lonely experience.

This year I looked for a singles ski trip and found the Obertauen trip with Sandra and Single Parent Holidays. I have never done anything like this before and it would be true to say I was a bit reticent at first, I did not know what to expect. I need not have worried, I met a group of likeminded friendly people and had the most amazing holiday. Thank you all, I would, most definitely, do it again."

- Rob - solo ski trip in Obertauern, Austria (January 2024)
"I would recommend Single Parents on Holiday and Solo Holidays for your solo trip. Very welcoming, well hosted and a good group of like minded people. I was slightly nervous going on this but that was completely unfounded and I settled into it quickly and easily."
- Chris - solo ski trip in Obertauern, Austria (January 2024)

- Kowkchee - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023

- Sally - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023
"From my experience as a solo traveler (solo skier) and for anyone contemplating a holiday of this type, I believe Sandra and Andrea offer great opportunities and experiences with their holiday packages. All details from the booking process, pre arrival information to the meet and greet at the destination carry a very personal touch with each and every guest. Totally recommend."
- Ian P - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023

- Anne - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023
"This is an excellent holiday for a solo skier. Good company in a good hotel. Sandra and her team go above and beyond- I particularly appreciated her guiding round the mountain. Even though the visibility was often poor I always felt completely safe and very well looked after. Thank you for a great holiday! "
- Rhiannon - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023
"Really lovely and interesting people. Can’t wait for the next one - Ian"
- Ian F - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023
"This was my second solo trip. Last year’s trip was excellent. This years was as good. Sandra organised another great holiday. Everyone engaged and the evenings were filled with good conversation and much laughter. I’ll definitely be going again."
- Robin - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023
"I loved my skiing holiday. From my first contact on email, through the caring and attentive responsiveness and camaraderie, to the sadness of having to leave on the shuttle back to Salzburg.
The other guests on the trip were friendly and welcoming and made me, as a non UK resident, feel like an integral part of the group immediately. Sandra, was not only organised, friendly, welcoming and efficient, but treated us all with grace and humanity. She made a personal connection with each one of us - this was not a person running a business, but a person who really cared. If you want to feel cared for and "seen", this is the trip for you!"

- Alan - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023
"Having had such a great time on my solo holiday in 2022 (to Schladming) I was nervous to book again in case this one didn't live up to my expectations. I shouldn't have been - I had yet another fantastic holiday.
Prior to departing the UK, Sandra and Andrea were both very helpful and communicative through the booking and planning process and then Sandra was in Obertauern to meet us on arrival and spend the week with us. It was so nice to see her again.
The group were a mix of previous and new guests which was great fun. The hotel was fabulous and the pistes were easily accessed ... if only the weather Gods had been a little more on our side ... not that that stopped us getting out on to the slopes every day. Then there were the spa facilities to relax in before drinks and dinner - bliss.
I would definitely recommend joining this a solo trip and hope to join again next season. Thank you to all involved."

- Angela - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023
"Going skiing on my own at 64 was quite daunting but the organisation and service from the team was excellent and I so enjoyed the whole atmosphere of the group and quality of the setting. I see myself becoming a regular attender!"
- Linda - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023
"My 3rd solo ski holiday & just as enjoyable as previous ones."
- Teddy - solo ski trip (Obertauern, Austria), March 2023
