Single Parent Family Holidays in South Devon

Discover the beauty and wilderness of South Devon, with its pretty beaches and coastal villages and the heather clad moorlands, pretty medieval villages, and rare wildlife of Dartmoor National Park – exhilarating places with an abundance of things to do for families. Join us on one of our single parent holidays in the south of the UK, hosted by one of our team members and enjoy a fun-packed week.

Our accommodation is part of a collection of several farm house cottages. We have rented the two largest barns, which each have 5 modern ensuite bedrooms for double, triple and quadruple occupancy, a large modern well-stocked kitchen as well as large dining and sitting areas with large screens. Located on the southern boundary of Dartmoor National Park near Ivybridge, the farm enjoys panoramic views across the moor on one side and the South Hams, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the other. It is the ideal starting point for walking the moor as well as visiting some of Devon’s most beautiful beaches and attractions. The site is an oasis of rural tranquillity, and a safe place for children to roam. There is a separate barn for the kids to unwind and play games, a lovely south facing courtyard great for relaxing, a guest lawn overlooking the countryside, a BBQ area, private woodland and three resident donkeys!

Your Programme:

Your SPoH host will offer lots of excursions for our single parent families. From experience not everyone in the group joins every trip. Below is an outline of activities suggested for your week of stay. Your host will adapt the programme as needed:

  • South Milton Sands, a long sandy beach perfect for rock pooling and sandcastles, with a visit of the pretty coastal town of Salcombe
  • local family walk: Long Timber Woods or a walk through the South Hams taking in the views of the coast
  • Pennywell farm with its miniature donkeys and pigs, hedgehogs, ‘funky fowl’, goats, ponies, alpacas, etc.
  • inside Dartmoor: see the wild horses as you drive to Widdecombe in the Moor and Hay Tor and stop at a lovely farm shop for coffee
  • Start Bay: Visit Start Point Lighthouse, walk the coastal paths, spot marine wildlife, or visit one of the nearby beaches and coastal towns

Alternatively, you could book an alpaca experience, visit the River Dart Country Park or the Cheston Farm Equestrian Centre, go kayaking, book a steam train ride or a Devon sea safari, visit the aquarium in Plymouth (great wet weather option), Sparkwell Zoo, Woodlands Family Theme Park, and much more. The choice is yours!

South Devon – the coast, the South Hams and Dartmoor National Park

Our barns on the edge of Dartmoor are ideally located to explore South Devon and the national park.  From here you can discover the South Devon coastline, with its sandy expanses and stunning secluded coves, rugged cliffs, pretty coastal villages and diverse waterside market towns. You will also find some of the best beaches in the UK here, from sheltered bays to sandy stretches, no two beaches are the same and all offer hours of fun for families.

South Hams is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stretching from the southern tip of Dartmoor National Park, to Devon’s south coast. It is a unique and diverse landscape dotted with quaint villages, nature reserves, and historic towns, such as famous Salcombe or Totnes, and a paradise for outdoor lovers.

Dartmoor National Park in the north of the South Hams is a vast moorland, and has been protected as a national park since 1951. An area of 954 km2 of heather clad moors, steep hills, and rugged tors, it is one of the last great wildernesses in the UK. The region is dotted with pretty villages, abandoned medieval farmhouses, Bronze Age stone circles and castle ruins. The landscape is best known for its wetlands and rock formations (tors), forests, rivers and roaming Dartmoor ponies. Its bottomless mires, craggy tors and thick mists have, no doubt, stirred the imagination of locals over centuries leading to colourful tales of pixies, ghosts and witchcraft, some of which are kept alive today through local tradition and folklore.

South Devon has something for everyone, from gentle walks to steep climbs, hacks over the moor on horseback and cycling, to kayaking and wild swimming. There are lots of outdoor activities and family attractions in and around the area as well as some excellent beaches within easy reach, such as Wembury, Bantham, Bigbury-on-Sea, Mothecombe, and Blackpool Sands.

The farm’s location

Our farm is located on the southern boundary of the Dartmoor national park just outside the village of Moorhaven. It enjoys unrivalled views of the unspoilt moorland on one side and the rolling South Hams countryside on the other, including views to the sea to the south in the distance. The nearest town is Ivybridge, which is a 10 minute trip by car.  The ancient town is rich in history with a medieval packhorse bridge that gives the town its name and a number of characterful pubs offering speciality ales from local brewers. It is also the starting point of the Two Moors Way – a long distance walking route to Lynmouth on the North Coast of Exmoor.

Our first single parent holiday in South Devon will take place in the October half term. In the meantime, the holiday reviews below are from similar trips abroad to give you an idea of how we run our single parent group holidays:

"This was a fantastic holiday from start to end. Our guide, Thomas, was incredibly helpful and very friendly and his input really made the trip memorable. The activities were fantastic and my 7-year old son absolutely loved them all. We normally left mid-morning for excursions and were back at the hotel by 3 pm (still time to have lunch) and then to swim in one of the 3 great pools. The kids especially loved the pool with the slide! The food at the hotel was of great quality and changed each day. The accommodation and facilities at the hotel were also great - as were the views from the terrace, where we enjoyed cocktails in the evening! All in all this was a fantastic holiday for both the adults and the children. We will definitely go back and would use SPOH again without any doubt."
- Jenni & Jack (7) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, August 2019
"Kristina age 11 - thank you for a lovely holiday. Me and nanny enjoyed ourselves so much. The slides in the salt caves were the best. Water rafting was so much fun and jumping off the rock into the river was very scary and exciting at the same time. I made friends and they are coming to visit us when we get back home.
Nanny age 55 - I was nervous at first, and wondered how I would get on with strangers but I had a lovely time, was never on my own, and watching my granddaughter enjoy herself with the other children was a bonus. The organised trips were very exciting; I especially loved the trek up the mountain and the picnic. We also managed to get some time just the two of us so couldn't have asked for a better holiday. Massive thank you to our 'guide' who was with us at meal times and on the excursions; organising us and making us laugh!"

- Karin & Kristina (11) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, July 2018
"Another thoroughly enjoyable holiday with SPOH. Friendly, like-minded adults, happy and excited kids. There was something for everyone on this action-packed holiday: hiking, rafting, summer tobogganing, or just floating in the infinity pool with one of the most stunning views I have ever seen. Despite all the action, it was the most relaxing week I've had all year thanks to the expert organisation skills of our lovely host, Thomas. Along with the almost, non-stop, delicious food, I hardly had to think or lift a finger all week. I'm ready for next year's holiday now!"
- Katrine & Marius (7) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, July 2018
"Alpendorf is a great location for this type of holiday, being on a mountain side enjoying fantastic views. The hotel has everything both the kids and adults could want including superb pools, one of them an infinity, a well-run gym with free classes and a wellness area. It’s full-board with the breakfast and dinner being excellent. The lunch is basic but runs for five hours leaving you to catch it before or after your day out; they’ll even make a packed lunch for you too. There are kids rooms and a park with mini golf, cars etc nearby that the kids can spend lots of time in whilst the adults relax in the hotel bar area.
Our guide, Thomas, organised daily activities which ranged from hikes to white-water rafting to tree-walking. My nine year old enjoyed all of these and was about the average age of the kids in the group. We had a large group with 14 adults so the girls and boys formed separate groups but everything worked well with both kids and adults being able to interact with different people during the week. Thomas had a laid-back approach which suited us and we never felt compelled to the activities.
Overall, it was a great week and I would recommend this to any single-parent, especially whose kids enjoy activities."

- Trevyn & Timothy (9) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, July 2018
"The view from the hotel was beautiful and Fin (age 11) loved the infinity pool overlooking the mountains. The age ranges of the children meant that he had plenty of children to play with and had a great time during the day and evenings, playing endless games of Uno (leaving the adults to relax over dinner and at the bar!) and careering about in the local park which was full of activities and situated right below the hotel. Our guide Thomas kept us informed about the daily activities and meeting times and was very relaxed and great company. "
- Laurie & Finlay (11) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, July 2018
"One of the best holidays I have ever had. The company, hotel, scenery and activities were all excellent. The rafting was so exciting. Both myself and my son loved this holiday. The organisation was superb and it was nice to just relax and enjoy it. "
- Julie & Jonny (11) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, July 2018
"This was an enjoyable holiday with my son!"
- Ryan & Kyle (9) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, July 2018
"A fantastic, action-packed week with friendly like-minded, people. An almost overwhelming choice of things to do – no two days were the same. Excellent hotel with a water slide that on its own would have kept my four-year-old happily occupied for a week. Delicious breakfasts and five course dinners every night kept us well fed for our packed agenda. A thoroughly enjoyable experience – one which I am looking forward to repeating!"
- Katrine & Marius (4) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, August 2015
"I could not recommend Alpendorf summer break highly enough. Myself and my 4/almost 5 year old daughter had a great week. There was plenty of company for us both – a lovely rapport within the group. Our “leader” Daniela was simply great – she facilitated everyone and ensured all went smoothly without ever dominating the group. Meals with separate adult and children tables (which evolved quite naturally!) were very welcome – it meant both children and parents had breathing space! We were blessed with weather in Aug 2012 and it will go down as my first real holiday since my daughter was born in that I was not responsible for organisation and decisions etc. A no brainer for a single parent looking for a nice break and a change of scene. Activities suitable for all ages of children – something for everyone from lake trips to paragliding and rafting for the more adventurous. Food was very good and varied. Hotel is beautiful – family feel – small. Our room had a great view and was tastefully furnished in alpine style etc. Can say no more than that!"
- Anita & Grace (4) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, August 2012
"We just got back from a wonderful week of activities and fun in Alpendorf. Beautiful place, great weather, wonderful hotel and the fantastic Daniela ensuring everyone has a great time, and it was simply superb. Anyone thinking about travelling there, just do it! You will not regret it. My kids and I have memories now that we will keep forever and I cant put a price on that (don’t miss the rafting day!)! Single Parents on Holiday clearly have this one nailed. Kids have unlimited fun, adults relax too and my kids are insisting that I book 2 more for next year already! – we will be going again."
- Nick & Harry (10), Lillie (10) & Molly (9) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, August 2011
"I just wanted to let you know what a brilliant time we had in Alpendorf. Everything far exceeded my expectations, hotel, food, activities, people AND we were very fortunate with the weather. Charlotte had a ball and has slept a lot since we arrived home.

- Hope & Charlotte (11) - single parent activity holiday in Alpendorf, August 2011
"This was the first time I have gone on a group holiday of any sort and I was a little apprehensive. Also my son is 13 almost 14 and I was concerned that the other children were quite a bit younger and he might feel a bit left out. I shouldn’t have worried. I can honestly say that this was the best holiday I have ever been on. The activities were plentiful and exhilarating and the Adults and equally the children were absolutely lovely. Daniela played a large part in making us all feel comfortable and organised everything extremely efficiently."
